A community for open collaboration, design fiction & social innovation.

Make the world work, for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation, without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.  – Buckminster Fuller

LEARN DO SHARE (LDS) is a grassroots innovation engine; a combination of events, labs & peer production.

We offer spaces for ad-hoc groups to meet, ideate and work out concepts for a common good. Our peer production cycles help groups stay together to co-create shared assets. We explore the future of work and learning by prototyping, documenting and openly sharing our efforts.

Our LEARN DO SHARE methodology and framework, which we like to call an OS (operating system) is being adapted by Universities, governments, organizations and makerspaces as a tool to help collaborations by harnessing storytelling, play, and design thinking.

The following is a sampling of Columbia University Sherlock Holmes & the Internet of Things MOOC materials.

Sherlock Holmes & the Internet Things explores shifts in ownership and authorship of stories while at the same time examining the ethical and political implications of the Internet of Things. A prototype of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab (which utilizes the LDS OS), the massive online/offline collaboration works to reimagine the world of Sherlock Holmes through the creation of smart storytelling objects and connected crimes scenes. Over the past year, 70 events have be staged by over 1,000 collaborators in 60 countries. At the core of the prototype sits is a MOOC that experiments with collaborative practice and adaptive leadership. The following is a sampling of content from the MOOC that teaches elements of collaborative design methodologies found within the LDS OS.

Collaborators Wanted for Learn Do Share 2016 prototypes

LEARN DO SHARE is a global community of thinkers & doers. We hold events and labs around the world (NYC, LA, Miami, Toronto, Montreal, London, Paris, Barcelona, Warsaw, Ghent, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Melbourne and Perth). Out of these events and labs, collaborative projects and prototypes emerge. Learn Do Share has a continual slate of projects and prototypes that are designed to interconnect, produce open resources and collect and measure impact. Through a holistic systems thinking approach we strive to tackle complex problems through storytelling, play and design thinking.

We welcome collaborators from all disciplines.

In Summer 2016, we’ll be running a special Collaborative Design course at Columbia University. We’re opening the design process for the course and are looking for collaborators.

The goal of the course is to co-design a Mesh Network for a neighborhood in North Philadelphia that has no access to high speed internet. Together with the Village of Arts & Humanities (a small local NGO) and the neighborhood, a group of storytellers, game designers, makers, hackers and educators will co-design and build a low cost solution that can bring broadband to the community.  .

To get involved please join the The Village of Arts & Humanities group.

printSherlock Holmes & the Internet of Things is an ongoing prototype developed and run by the Columbia University Digital Storytelling Lab that explores new forms and functions of story. Designed to be an open R&D space that experiments with shifts in authorship and ownership of stories, the massive collaboration also uses a detective narrative to examine the policy and ethical issues surrounding the Internet of Things.

Join the planning for 2016 as we integrate Artificial Intelligence and build a massive connected global crime scene.

Join a growing global community of thinkers & doers using story, play, design & tech to make social impact.

This site is a prototype to enable a cross-pollination of skills and opportunities. An experiment to bridge our live events to a digital learning and work space. At LDS we strive to experiment with collaborative practice and like all our efforts we try to document and share as much as we can.

Over the last few years she has dedicated her work to projects centered on Story Design for Social Impact and applies a human centered design approach – storytelling “with” instead of “for” – that engages the audience in the storytelling process.

Sarah Henry creates collaborative organizational frameworks and design data-driven systems. She received her MFA in Interaction Design at the School of Visual Arts and has worked with organizations such as The New York Times, Columbia University, Tribeca Film Institute, and General Electric.

Prototyping the library of the future

Screen Shot 2015-10-26 at 8.22.57 PM

Santa Monica Public Library is envisioning the future of the organization through the process of strategic planning.  A major focus of this effort is to solicit input from the Santa Monica community in order to ensure that the Library’s newly formed plan will meet the needs of the community it serves.  As part of these efforts, the Pico Branch Library has invited, Learn Do Share – a design collective and global innovation engine – to join us as we imagine, design and prototype the future of library services at the Pico Branch.

You must make a difficult choice, right now. Give up your name, identity, and sense of self to be housed, fed, and clothed. Or wander aimlessly through life, hungry, in constant fear of the unknown, and alone—but in control of who you are.

Stop reading and make that decision. Or someone will make it for you.

This is the choice many children face when entering the large, and often chaotic US foster care system. It is also the foundation for My Sky Is Falling, a new kind of participatory, purposeful story. The following case study documents the development of a toolkit for creating and evaluating immersive, narrative experiences. Throughout this paper we explore the ways in which integrating data collection and evaluation into the development of immersive platforms can benefit purposeful, participatory storytelling practices.  DOWNLOAD WHITE PAPER

DataCardInstructionONGOING PROTOTYPE: Civic Innovation Lab

Recently, the county of Los Angeles has been focused on implementing initiatives based on Open Data. To do so, the County worked with Hub LA and Learn Do Share to develop an accelerator dedicated to the development of data-driven solutions designed with and for the communities of Los Angeles. To do so Learn Do Share’s OS was utilized to help design and build the initiative.
This was the start of the Civic Innovation Lab, which is part design lab, part community caucus, and part accelerator of urban solutions.  Sarah Henry a frequent LDS collaborator developed a set of data cards, which were used to help facilitate conversation and design thinking around a newly created Open Data portal. This work was important in distilling large amounts of data into information that participants could ideate with.  DOWNLOAD CARDS
